This course aims at acquainting the student with the social, political and cultural background of Neoclassical, Romantic and Victorian poetry. Extracts of representative poems by poets such as John Dryden, Alexander Pope, Dr. Samuel Johnson, William Blake, William Wordsworth, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Alfred Lord Tennyson and Matthew Arnold are examined. Besides, contrasting themes, forms and styles are discussed.
En 503- Comparative Literature

This course examines literature across linguistic and cultural boundaries. It focuses on the comparative analysis of both Arabic and Western literatures and cultures in different historical periods and across different literary genres.
In this course we study the syntax of human language. Syntax is concerned with how words are combined to form sentences. We will analyze syntactic phenomena from a variety of the world’s languages. This will reveal interesting patterns lurking within human languages. We will also analyze the surprising similarities across seemingly diverse languages.


Course objectives
• Gain an understanding of the complexity and diversity of syntactic structures of natural language
• Learn how to construct and test hypotheses, and evaluate arguments based on linguistic data
Gain a foundation for further study of syntax
