The aim of this course is to introduce you to the most important notions and concepts related to culture from the nineteenth to the twenty first century. Assessment Strategy: 25% Course work:

This course will employ the theoretical terms that characterize postcolonial studies in analyzing a selection of literary texts drawn from various postcolonial nations in order to gain consciousness of the impact of postcolonial theory on literature.
This term we will be introduced to the interdisciplinary field of language and society. This is a very interesting, but demanding course. Hope you enjoy it :)

Course objectives

1. To introduce you to sociolinguistics.
2. To guide you in acquiring knowledge about main concepts in sociolinguistics: dialect variation, ethnic dialects, language contact situations.
3: Knowledge and understanding:
a- You will know about the basic tenets of sociolinguistics.
b- You will be introduced to key concepts such as dialects, accents, slang.
c- You will understand how variables such education, socioeconomic background, age, and gender influence the way we use language.
d- You will learn about different ethnic varieties of English and Arabic


This course introduces students to the field of Women's Studies in the Egyptian context. It invites students to explore the dynamics of gender in relation to health, rights, religious beliefs, and beauty through fictional and non-fictional texts as well as documentaries. Through exploration of the roots of the women's rights movement in Egypt and study of the distinction between feminist analysis and women's studies students acquire a solid understanding of gender and its social power.
