Animal Biotechnology
Course
Animal biotechnology includes all animals: livestock, poultry, fish, insects, companion animals and laboratory animals. Applications developed through research have led to the emergence of three scientific agricultural animal biotechnology sectors:
• 1. Animal genomics
• 2. Animal cloning
• 3. Genetic engineering of animal
Examples: Creating transgenic animals, using gene knock out or Knock in technology.
Key Technologies in Animal Breeding
Since animals were first domesticated, many technologies have been developed to select for desirable qualities, make breeding easier, and make animals produce more offspring. Many of those technologies, including six main themes in the patent data for animal genetic resources:
o Artificial Insemination, Sex Selection, and Control of Estrus, in vitro fertilization (IVF), embryo flushing
o Marker Assisted Breeding (including Quantitative Trait Loci)
o Transgenic Animals
o Cloning Animals
o Xenotransplantation
o Animal Models
